A horse was hit by a car and died after escaping its field during a storm.

The incident happened on the A836 at Bonar Bridge at around 6am on January 29.

A number of horses escaped onto the road and one suffered fatal injuries when it was hit by a passing car.

Police have appealed for a delivery driver who stopped to help to contact them.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Sutherland are looking to trace a driver in relation to a road traffic collision that happened on the A836 at Balblair, Bonar Bridge.

"A male driver of a delivery van or small lorry type vehicle stopped to assist a horse owner after their animals had escaped onto the road.

"It is thought the man may have witnessed a subsequent collision between a car and one of the horses."

Police have asked anyone with any information about the crash to contact them on 101.
