A search has been launched following reports of a man seen falling from an Inverness bridge.

The man reportedly fell into the River Ness from the Greig Street Bridge at around 5.20pm on Sunday.

A search involving the coastguard and RNLI was launched on Sunday evening after police were alerted.

The man seen falling from the bridge is thought to have been in his 40s and was reportedly dressed in dark clothing.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At 5.20pm on Sunday, police in Inverness received a report from a member of the public that a man had entered the River Ness from the Greig Street footbridge.

"Extensive land and air searches were carried out immediately by officers and local coastguard and lifeboat crews. Unfortunately the man was not traced but full searches will resume today.

"Police would appeal to anyone with information on the incident to make contact via 101."
