Two friends who died after falling from a mountain in Glen Coe have been named.

Simon Davidson, 34, and Joe Smith, 23, were found in the Stob Coire nam Beith area on Saturday afternoon.

The men, who were roped together when they fell, were described as "experienced and well-equipped climbers".

Simon Yearsley, who ice-climbed with Mr Davidson in the Glen Coe area, paid tribute to his "passion and determination".

He said: "Simon was a very talented climber and I got the sense of somebody who knew exactly what they were doing and who was technically very skilled.

"As climbers we know what we do carries an inherent risk and any climber who ignores that is only getting themselves in trouble.

"Simon was not one of those people - he knew the risks involved and managed them."

He added: "Simon was passionate about climbing and there was a quiet determination behind everything he did which set him apart.

"He lived a very full outdoor life."

Mr Smith was a member of Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, who helped recover his body on Saturday.

Team leader Andy Nelson said: "The guys were roped together so it is possible they were still on the climb, but they have clearly fallen some distance.

"My information is that they have been killed instantly by the fall. They had all the relevant equipment and there is nothing to suggest that they were ill-equipped or inexperienced."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police can confirm the identities of the men as Joe Smith, 23, who who lived in Kinlochleven but was originally from the Lancashire area, and Simon Davidson, 34, from the Edinburgh area.

"A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal. Members of the public and mountain rescue teams are thanked for their efforts during this incident."
