Man dies after falling overboard from ferry into the North Sea

A man has died after falling overboard from a ferry into the North Sea.

He was travelling between Aberdeen and Orkney when he fell from the MV Hjaltland at around 8.15pm on Sunday.

Aberdeen Coastguard was alerted and the man was rescued by helicopter before being taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Grampian Police confirmed it was investigating the incident, which took place north of Fraserburgh.

A spokeswoman said: “At around 2100 hours last night, a man was recovered from the North Sea having been reported overboard from the Aberdeen-Kirkwall-Lerwick ferry.

“He was conveyed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and died a short time later.

“Grampian Police, with the assistance of Northern Constabulary, are investigating the circumstances and no further information will be released until the man has been identified and next of kin have been informed.”
