A tourist has died after falling 50ft down a cliff above Clamshell Cave on the Isle of Staffa.

The Tobermory RNLI lifeboat, which was in the area dealing with a routine towing operation, responded quickly to reports that a man was badly injured after falling down a cliff on Friday afternoon.

Tobermory RNLI’s volunteer crew managed to locate the tourist — believed to be German and treated his injuries.

A spokseman for the RNLI said: "The lifeboat crew members attended to the casualty who was very seriously injured and prepared him for evacuation by the Royal Navy’s search and rescue helicopter from HMS Gannet at Prestwick."

Unfortunately the man died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Deputy Second Coxswain Jane Griffiths said: "The thoughts of all of us are with the family and friends of the deceased at this sad time."
