Craig Whyte: 'I was speeding because I was worried about my castle'

Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte was so worried about the security of his Highland castle that he sped at almost 90mph on the A9.

The businessman was caught by officers as he returned to Castle Grant in Grantown-on-Spey having attended meetings in the Highlands.

Whyte admitted the driving offence in a letter that was sent to Inverness Justice of the Peace Court on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old was fined £280 and hit with four penalty points on his license, which already has six points.

Whyte did not appear in person but was represented by solicitor Paul Kavanagh who submitted a letter from police for the magistrate John Matheson JP to read in his chambers before the case was called.

Mr Kavanagh told the court: "The contents of the letter are not to be divulged in public. But my client accepted an invitation to meet with officers from Strathclyde Police and Northern Constabulary because of issues regarding his security prior to this offence on March 29.

"In early March his house had been subject to graffiti and he had received a call about another possible security breach. This was at a time when he was involved with a Glasgow football club.

"He was en route to his house after returning from various business meetings in London when he was stopped by police officers. All that was on his mind was the security of his house."

Whyte, whose London address was given as his home, admitted driving at 87mph at the Nuide on the A9 between Dalwhinnie and Aviemore on March 29.
