Fisherman severs two fingers while pulling nets aboard vessel

Raigmore hospital: It is hoped the man's fingers can be reattached.

A fisherman has severed two of his fingers while helping to pull heavy fishing line aboard his vessel.

The 26-year-old man was taken by helicopter to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness where staff hope to reattach his fingers, the coastguard said.

The accident happened on Thursday morning on the fishing boat Ceristum, in the waters between South Uist and Skye.

A spokesman for Stornoway coastguard said the man severed one of his fingers completely and another was "hanging from his palm" after his hand got caught in fishing line being pulled into the boat mechanically.

The skipper of the five-man crew alerted the coastguard and the injured man was transported to the mainland.
