Wildfires force closure of A99 as smoke reduces visibilty

Closure: The A99 has been closed again.

The A99 has been closed again as firefighters battle to control wildfires in the Canisbay area.

Excessive smoke from wildfires that have been burning for more than 24 hours forced the closure due to safety concerns.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: "This affects approximately two miles of road on the A99 at Canisbay, south of John O' Groats.

"It is not known at this time how long the road will remain closed, however there are local diversions in place."

Over 80 emergency service personnel have worked in recent days to bring blazes at Canisbay and Killimster under control.

Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue service had previously scaled down the number of appliances at each fire, which had spread for miles on Monday.
