Two people have been airlifted to hospital after a two-car crash.

Northern Constabulary were called to the incident around 1.15pm on Saturday on the A831 Drumnadrochit to Cannich road near Loch Ness in the Highlands.

Firefighters were in attendance and had to cut a man out of one of the cars.

He and a female were then flown to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with serious injuries.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: "The vehicles involved were a Green Vauxhall Corsa which was travelling westwards and a grey Peugeot 5008 which was travelling in the opposite direction. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the four occupants, two in each vehicle, were transferred to Raigmore Hospital with varying severity of injuries.

"One had to be cut from their vehicle by Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service and was conveyed to hospital by air ambulance. The road was closed for approximately five-and-a-half hours whilst officers from the force's road policing unit conducted a full collision investigation."

A spokeswoman for Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue said a man and a woman in the other car were able to free themselves from their vehicle and were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Northern Constabulary are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or can speak to the manner in which either vehicle was being driven, before the crash, to contact them on 01463 715555.
