Swine flu vaccinations will be offered to 1.4 million Scots from October.

The Scottish Government have announced the first phase will target all frontline health workers, pregnant women and those in high risk groups from seasonal flu aged over six months but under the age of 65.

Anyone sharing a house with someone who suffers chronic disease could also be vaccinated, as well as people aged 65 and over in the current seasonal flu vaccine clinical at-risk groups. The government insist this group does not include otherwise healthy over 65s, since they appear to have some natural immunity to the virus.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "At this stage, and this is subject to change, we anticipate being able to commence the vaccination programme some time in the middle of October."

The Government has said it will secure enough vaccine for the whole population - but early supply will be limited. This means about 1.4 million people will be first in line, Ms Sturgeon said.

The October start date depends on licensing of vaccines but manufacturers said they could be ready in late September or early October. The vaccination programme will begin subject to the vaccine being licensed by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA). This organisation has strict processes in place for licensing pandemic vaccines and the vaccine will not be used until it is licensed.

The impact of children returning to school will also be monitored.

At a briefing in Edinburgh, Ms Sturgeon said: "We will be working with schools to put a focus on hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene messages in schools.

"It remains the case that that's the best way of reducing the spread of infection. Obviously, we will be monitoring carefully the impact of the school going back on the spread of the virus."

For the second week, health officials estimate that about 3,000 people contracted swine flu in Scotland. The rate of GP consultation for flu-like symptoms fell from 48.4 to 44.2 per 100,000 people.

About 9.5% of community samples tested positive for swine flu last week, compared to 10% the week before. Ms Sturgeon said ten people were currently in hospital with the virus in Scotland.
