Abdelbaset al-Megrahi: December 21, 1988 will always remain one of the darkest days in Scottish history. 270 people perished when Pan Am flight 103 blew up over the skies of Dumfriesshire and crashed into the town of Lockerbie. On July 25 this year, Megrahi applied to be released from jail on compassionate grounds. Once he dropped his outstanding appeal, Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced to the world on August 20 that he was going to send Megrahi home “to die”.
