'Explosion' at harbour forces closure of bridge in both directions

Emergency services were called throughout the night to the harbour area of Friarton Road in Perth following the explosion.

A bridge has been closed in both directions after an explosion at a harbour in Perth.

Fire crews were called to the incident shortly before 3am on Tuesday, and remain in attendance alongside police and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The blaze has left a section of the M90 at Friarton Bridge closed, with the public urged to avoid the area.

It is unknown yet if there are any fatalities.

A police spokesperson said: “M90 Friarton Bridge, Perth, has been closed in both directions due to an explosion at premises in the harbour area of Friarton Road.

“Emergency services are at the scene and people are advised to avoid the area.”

Perth and Kinross council tweeted: “Please stay safe if you’re in the harbour area/Friarton and follow advice from emergency services.

“Also be aware of likely impact on roads around Perth due to closure of Friarton Bridge.”
