Soldiers leave for six month tour of Afghanistan

A battalion of soldiers from Scotland are heading out for a six month tour of Afghanistan.

Around 450 soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Rifles are being deployed on Wednesday.

They will be part of 12 Mechanised Brigade which is commanding Task Force Helmand.

Their role will include training and mentoring the Afghan security forces as well as advising on operational issues throughout Helmand.

The battalion, based at Redford Barracks in Edinburgh, will help develop the Afghan National Army and their ability to support themselves after transition.

It is the first time the battalion have been out to Afghanistan since 2010.
