The Scottish Labour candidate for next month’s Dunfermline by-election has been announced.

Cara Hilton, who was elected to Fife Council for the first time in May 2012, will stand for election to the Scottish Parliament.

The seat became vacant when Bill Walker resigned 16 days after being convicted for a string of domestic abuse against three ex-wives and a stepdaughter over 28 years. He cited a "media onslaught" for his resignation, which sparked a by-election for the seat.

On Sunday, local Labour party members selected 38-year-old Ms Hilton to contest the by-election on October 24.

She said: "Dunfermline needs an MSP who will work their socks off for this constituency and who will go to Parliament and put Dunfermline first, not the constitution and the referendum next year. We can't afford to put Dunfermline and Scotland on pause any longer.

"I look forward to the campaign ahead and to speaking to thousands of local people who are so desperate for an MSP who will move us on from the disgrace of Bill Walker and who will fight for what we need here in Dunfermline. I hope that people put their trust in me. I won't let them down."

Ms Hilton joined the Labour Party when she was 15 and is the daughter of Cathy Peattie who was the Labour MSP for Falkirk East from 1999 to 2011.
