A man was killed after being hit by a car in Edinburgh just hours after the capital's Hogmanay street party.

The 41-year-old was hit at around 4.20am on Saturday.

He was crossing Union Place, near the Playhouse Theatre, when he was hit by a northbound black Toyota. He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but died soon after.

Its driver has been interviewed and is assisting Lothian and Borders Police with their investigation.

A police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed the collision to contact police immediately.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist our inquiries should also get in touch."
