Scotland international Leigh Griffiths is believed to have been arrested and charged over a shoplifting incident in Edinburgh on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, who is currently on loan to Hibs from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was allegedly detained at the Tesco store on Meadow Place.

It is understood that police were called to the store after the striker was detained by security staff.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "A 22-year-old man has been arrested and charged over an alleged shoplifting offence at Tesco on Meadow Place on Saturday January 26.

"He will appear in court at a later date."

The striker posted on social media service Twitter following the incident, saying that it had been a misunderstanding.

He tweeted: "Iv been caught shoplifting but I'm tweeting? Pretty sure I'd be in a cell??? Think about it! Not been caught shoplifting at all".

Griffiths, who is from Edinburgh, has scored 15 goals for Hibs so far this season. He made his Scotland debut in November 2012, playing in a friendly against Luxembourg.

A spokesman for the Easter Road club said: "The club is aware of an alleged incident which took place on Saturday afternoon involving the player. This is now a police matter."
