The colleague and former boyfriend of Suzanne Pilley has been fully committed to stand trial for her murder, following a second court appearance in private.

David Gilroy was released on bail last week after he was charged with murder and breach of the peace. On Thursday, the 47-year-old appeared in private in front of Sheriff Nigel Morrison QC and was again granted bail.

Mr Gilroy made no plea or declaration after being judicially examined at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. His lawyer Jim Wardlaw spoke briefly to reporters after the hearing, saying: "He was judicially examined and thereafter he was fully committed for trial. A further petition for bail was lodged and granted."

At a judicial examination the accused can be questioned by the fiscal and can be asked for to explain or comment on statements they may have made previously.

Ms Pilley has not been seen since May 4, when she was spotted on CCTV arriving at her office on Thistle Street. Police believe she was then murdered, though her body has not been found.

Gilroy's defence agent Jim Wardlaw spoke briefly to reporters after the private appearance.

He said: "My client has been served with a petition which alleges he is responsible for the murder of Suzanne Pilley. Bail was applied for and granted."

John Scott, Vice President for Crime of the Society of Solicitor Advocates, said it was not unheard of for murder suspects to be released on bail.

He told STV News: “The court now has to consider the full circumstances surrounding both the allegation and the individual.

“Until around the year 2000 in Scotland, people who were charged murder did not get bail, other than in the most exceptional circumstances. But that was a human rights problem so now every case is considered on its own merits.”

Officers detained Mr Gilroy on Wednesday afternoon and arrested him after questioning. Police confirmed he had been charged with her suspected murder later that evening.

Miss Pilley worked for Infrastructure Managers, a company which used to employ married Mr Gilroy. The couple had a year-long relationship.
