The family of a driver who died in hospital almost two weeks after a car crash on New Year's Day has been left "utterly devastated".

David Gasper, from Hungary, was fatally injured in the collision between a silver Ford Fusion and a white Vauxhall Mokka in Murrayburn Road, Edinburgh, at about 6.45pm on January 1.

The 20-year-old, who had moved to Edinburgh in September to start a new life, was travelling with his 13-year-old cousin when the crash happened. Mr Gasper was taken to the Western General Hospital but died on Monday.

His cousin was also taken to hospital for treatment but later released. The driver of the Vauxhall sustained injuries to his body.

In a statement released through Police Scotland, Mr Gasper's family thanked doctors for their care and residents of Murrayburn Road, who looked after the 13-year-old after the crash.

The family said: "David was much-loved and his death has left us utterly devastated.

"He had travelled to Edinburgh last September with the hope of providing a better life for his family who he loved very much and we are all so sad that he is no longer with us.

"We take comfort from the thought that he is now at peace and we would like to thank the medics who tried to save his life.

"We also wish to express our gratitude to the local residents who came out from their homes and supplied water and blankets to David's cousin moments after the crash.

"We are still coming to terms with losing David and we ask anyone who witnessed the crash to please make yourself known to police and assist with their investigation."

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash and urged any witnesses to contact them.
